Saw Mill Parkway Viaducts, Westchester County, NY
The concept of "partnering" took a giant leap forward as the proposal to use a precast solution offered in a comprehensive "value-engineering alternative" was accepted by the NYSDOT in lieu of the cast-in-place design shown in the original contract plans. The use of precast concrete structures provided the owner with high quality, durable piers and "zero" tension in the bridge deck which translates to an extended life for these heavily traveled viaducts. In addition, the contractor cut nearly one year out of the original three-year schedule. This project received the NYSDOT/AGC 1999 Award for Partnering, the New York Construction News "Award of Merit" Bridge Project 1999 and was featured in an Engineering News Record story.

The viaducts, which carry the heavy traffic of I-287 in Westchester Co., NY over the Saw Mill Parkway and Bronx River Parkway, are a vital segment of the I-287 corridor. The Saw Mill River viaduct is 150 lf wide by 1,250 lf long. The Bronx River Parkway Viaduct is 150 lf wide by 1,080 lf long.
