Route 112 Precast Crosswalks Port Jefferson, NY


Crosswalks made from precast Super-Slabs were installed during overnight road closures while maintaining traffic through this very busy intersection that serves two hospitals near historic Port Jefferson, NY. Located in an active downtown close to a busy rail station and bus stops, traffic calming features were provided to improve access across NY Route 112 and enhance pedestrian safety. Colored and imprinted crosswalks make the pedestrian crossing more visible to drivers. Developed by the New York State Department of Transportation, Region 10 Landscape Architecture & Environmental Services and Technical Services groups, the attractive colored and imprinted precast pavement allowed rapid installation and should not deteriorate under the heavy traffic volumes.

Individual, three-dimensional (warped) precast concrete slabs were designed and fabricated to meet the exact surface of the intersection pavement. Slabs were cast to accommodate existing manholes and other unique features.

Super-Slab® panels were cast with red pigment and textured with a specially fabricated brick imprint along the edges. A new handicap-accessible sidewalk was placed after the crosswalks were installed.
