I-95 Pavement Repairs, Albany, NY

The New York State Thruway Authority again leads the way in full depth pavement rehabilitation by specifying the intermittent use of precast concrete pavement slabs (Super-Slab®) on this 6.8 mile long pavement restoration project on the I-95 New England Thruway in Bronx and Westchester Counties, NY. Because this vital New York City corridor services approximately 140,000 vehicles per day, two-lane work closures were limited to only five hours per night. Over 50,000 SF of slabs were installed in 2007 with absolutely no impact to daytime traffic volume. The installation was so successful that the contractor completed the entire Southbound roadway and started the Northbound roadway which was not scheduled to be done until 2008.

Saw cutting was accomplished during the nights prior to the actual replacement night. In the brief, five hour work window the existing pavement was removed, load transfer dowels installed, the subgrade finished and the slabs placed at the approximate average rate of eight slabs per night.
The contractor placed slabs adjacent to live traffic lanes, seen on the right. Slabs were placed right up to the end of the shift since Super-Slabs could be opened to traffic even before they were grouted, maximizing the slab installation rate. The slabs were permanently grouted within a night or two of installation.
