Gingerbread Castle Road, Hamburg, NJ
The Gingerbread Castle Road Bridge, located in Hamburg, Sussex County, NJ, spans the Wallkill River adjacent to the historic mill known as Joseph Sharp’s Iron Works. This single span bridge consists of three Prefabricated Bridge Units with integral bearing backwalls and six sections of precast Texas rail bridge barrier. The owner selected this system to increase the much needed under-clearance, expedite the installation and limit the closure time. The bridge units and balustrade were manufactured with lightweight aggregates to reduce the dead load and contribute to increasing the capacity of the substructure. (Photo by Walter H. Cramp, P.E.)

The decorative precast concrete Texas rail bridge barrier blends in nicely with the adjacent mill and surrounding stonework. By incorporating new barrier with a touch of antiquity in a location surrounded by natural beauty and historic prominence - the past and the present are brought together.
The use of a plate girder design, lightweight aggregate concrete and a bearing backwall combined to create a shallow, easy to install, high performance solution for the Gingerbread Castle Road Bridge.
