Alcoa Road over the Grasse River, Massena, NY
This attractive haunched steel plate girder bridge was designed by the New York State Department of Transportation to carry Alcoa Road over the Grasse River in Massena, NY. Precast towers, reminiscent of the original structure, were post-tensioned to the tops of the cast-in-place piers. Steel finials from the original bridge were placed atop the new towers. The towers provide a “gateway” to those traveling on the river and the roadway.

The historic park area at the end of the bridge was bounded by laid up native stone walls topped with a graceful precast concrete coping, blending the park area with the adjacent bridge. This project demonstrates how a modern superstructure can be built while maintaining the local heritage.
