NYS Rt. 20 over Skaneateles Lake, Skaneateles, NY
This Rt. 20 bridge over an inlet to beautiful Skaneateles Lake in downtown Skaneateles, NY was replaced in just 6 months while maintaining two-way traffic in this vital business district at all times. Ingenious engineering, in response to community concerns over retention of historic features in this charming town enabled preservation of the existing laid up stone abutments and adjacent walls. Effective partnering between NYSDOT, the village, the engineer and the contractor brought this project in under budget and ahead of schedule, enabling construction to be completed one year earlier than expected.

The first stage of the bridge was installed during a snow storm on March 1, 2005 while traffic was maintained on a portion of the existing bridge. The artful integration of the new integral-abutment-supported superstructure, complete with a decorative steel bridge rail and adjacent existing stone walls is evident in the photo below. The bridge was opened to traffic on May 27, 2005.
