Tappan Zee Bridge Toll Plaza, Tarrytown, NY


The Tappan Zee Bridge Toll Plaza in Tarrytown, NY is shown near completion of the reconstruction. A total of 183,000 sf of pavement was removed and replaced in the Fall of 2001 and the Spring of 2002 with the newly developed precast concrete pavement Super-Slab® System. The contractor installed about 3,000 sf of panels in each 8-hour, off-peak, traffic closure. The Toll Plaza services over 125,000 vehicles per day and the contractor faced a penalty of $1,300 per minute if the Toll Plaza was not opened at 6:00 a.m. each day. The installation proved so successful that no penalties were assessed and the "smoothness" of the riding surface, after panel placement, eliminated the need for diamond grinding.
