Marine Parkway Bridge Toll Plaza, Brooklyn, NY

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) demonstrated the use of precast Super-Slab® to replace 6,814 sf of deteriorated pavement at their Marine Parkway Toll Plaza Facility in Brooklyn, NY in September, 2005. Project plans and specifications required the new slabs to meet the adjacent existing concrete pavement within a tolerance of 1/8 in. Though imperceptible in this photo, nearly all slabs were warped and unique in size in order to fit between existing longitudinal joints. All the slabs were connected with transverse dowels and longitudinal tie bars. The entire project was completed in five days and had very little impact to the patrons utilizing the bridge.

Hand operated grading equipment was used to provide an accurate subgrade surface as seen above. This facilitated rapid slab placement and minimized the amount of bedding grout required. Reinforcement in the slabs permitted the crane to occupy ungrouted slabs to set more slabs ahead, making the installation linear and unobtrusive to adjacent toll plaza traffic. A total of 50 slabs were placed in two days.
