A total of (4) prefabricated bridge units (PBUs) and (8) precast concrete approach slabs were recently installed on CT Route 4 over West Branch Leadmine Brook in the town of Harwinton, Connecticut. These 45-ton units were fabricated in Fort Miller’s Easton, NY yard, approximately 130 miles from the project site. Delivered to the site using specialized hauling equipment, all (4) units were set in place by the contractor – Mastrobattisto, Inc. from Bristol, Connecticut. Besides being cast with (2) W24x104 steel girders, each of the (4) prefabricated bridge units featured an 8-1/2″ thick reinforced concrete deck and precast concrete backwalls.
