This project featured substructure rehabilitation and deck replacements on four mainline bridges (76North, 76South, 77North, and 77South) on one of the busiest corridors in the most populated county in the state of Vermont. This accelerated bridge construction (ABC) project was delivered through a Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) contract where the designer, owner, contractor, (and in this case the precast manufacturer) were involved in developing the means and methods of construction. In an effort to minimize impact on the traveling public, the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VAOT) allowed for six separate weekend closures to complete the entire project. In order to support this very aggressive schedule, the team chose a patented and innovative full depth precast deck system called AccelBridge™. The two 151-ft and two 185-ft span bridges had their decks replaced in only (59) hours during four of the six weekends. The full width AccelBridge™ deck system eliminated costly cast-in-place joints between panels. While cast-in-place joints would not only be time consuming to construct, they eventually become a source of corrosion. These self-aligning, match cast units provided VAOT with a durable new deck that is in compression without requiring any post-tensioning. Fort Miller manufactured (58) bridge deck panels (over 23,500-SF), (32) precast approach slabs, (32) precast backwalls, and (8) precast sleeper slabs for this project.
