BQE Approach to Williamsburg

Owner: New York State Department of Transportation

Contractor: Perini Corporation

Designer: Daniel Frankfurt P.C.

Contractor’s Engineer: Finley – McNary P.C.

The first precast concrete segmental bridge constructed by The New York State D.O.T. winds its way through the streets of Brooklyn, NY. The structure, comprising 278 units and over 2,500 lf long, provided the vital link between the heavily traveled BQE and the Williamsburg Bridge. The challenging geometry and difficult site conditions were handled by the project team that successfully worked through a variety of design and construction issues to deliver the project on time. As a result, the team associated with the project received the AGC/NYSDOT Partnering Award in 2001. This project was the subject of a feature story in Engineering News Record.

A unit weighing 50 tons is carefully placed into position during the construction phase. The densely populated site, coupled with the heavy traffic volume below the work area, contributed to the complexity of the installation. A unique top-down approach that actually rolled the units in to place provided the perfect solution.
