Padelford Street over Rt. 24

Precast concrete substructure units and prefabricated bridge units (PBUs) on Padelford Street over Route 24 in the Town of Berkley in Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Because the replacement of this key overpass bridge would have required a 2-year closure and impacted the daily life of citizens and commuters alike, a Design-Build method of project delivery was utilized by the owner, MassDOT. The successful bidding team of MAS Building & Bridge, Inc. and WSP chose an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) solution as the best-value option.

Fort Miller fabricated a total of (46) substructure units for this project, including; abutment footings, abutment walls, wingwall footings and walls, pier footings, columns, pier caps, and backwalls. A total of (8) PBUs were also fabricated. Each PBU was over 106-ft long and weighed between 60 and 63-tons.

Because the connection of the units relied heavily upon protruding reinforcing and splice sleeves cast at very tight tolerances, the entire bridge was pre-assembled at Fort Miller’s Easton, NY plant to ensure proper alignment in the field.
