Discover how we utilized precast solutions for rapid bridge repair on the Long Island Expressway, minimizing traffic disruption.

Project Stakeholders

  • Owner: New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT)
  • Contractor: The Modern Continental Construction Co., Inc.
  • Designer: Earth Tech

Project Overview

The Long Island Expressway Bridge over 58th Street in Queens, NY is a critical transportation artery, carrying six lanes of traffic on each level. When the deteriorated second-level superstructure required replacement, rapid bridge repair solutions were essential to minimize disruptions to commuters.

Scope and Details:

The precast concrete Inverset System was selected for its efficiency and reliability. This innovative system allowed the second-level superstructure to be replaced during two weekend closures, maintaining two lanes of traffic on the second level and six lanes on the third level throughout the process. This approach ensured minimal impact on one of New York’s busiest thoroughfares.

Key highlights of this rapid bridge repair project included:

  • Construction Challenges: The presence of a third level limited the use of conventional cranes. The team overcame this by preassembling components and leveraging precise logistics.
  • Innovative Design: For the first time, Inverset units were framed into a center bent, making the structure fully continuous over two spans.
  • Precast Precision: The contractor pre-erected the entire bridge in Fort Miller’s precast yard, ensuring all 2,144 holes were predrilled for a perfect fit, significantly reducing field assembly time.
  • 3D Modeling: Advanced computer 3D modeling verified the feasibility of the work, mitigating risks and enabling a flawless execution plan.

Impact and Innovation

This project exemplifies the power of precast solutions in rapid bridge repair, showcasing how innovation and meticulous planning can streamline complex infrastructure projects. Fort Miller’s expertise in precast systems played a pivotal role in meeting tight timelines while maintaining traffic flow.
