Project Overview
The Route 9 Broadway Bridge over I-287 in Tarrytown, NY, is a milestone in precast innovation and accelerated bridge construction. Tasked with replacing a critical two-span structure while maintaining traffic flow on this heavily traveled corridor, the construction team selected Fort Miller Group to engineer and deliver a modular precast concrete bridge deck solution that met every logistical and performance demand.
Built in three meticulously staged phases, the bridge replacement maintained two lanes of traffic throughout construction. Fort Miller’s precision-fabricated precast deck units played a central role in making this possible, offering rapid installation and minimizing disruption to both local and thruway motorists.
Scope and Details
Fort Miller fabricated two full-length precast concrete/steel composite spans, each measuring 136 feet and weighing 127 tons: the largest modular bridge components in the company’s history at that time. These prefabricated bridge units were cast with steel girders and engineered to accommodate integrated utility lines, skewed geometry, and the structural load of Route 9.
A major design challenge was the bridge’s pronounced 45-degree skew, which required extreme precision in both engineering and fabrication. Fort Miller’s team developed custom formwork and deck geometries to ensure perfect alignment with the angled abutments and pier, eliminating the need for on-site adjustments during installation.
Each precast unit was transported approximately 175 miles to the bridge site using specialized multi-axle equipment. Installation occurred exclusively at night, ensuring uninterrupted daytime traffic on I-287 and Route 9.
The project’s three-stage sequence allowed the bridge to be replaced efficiently while maintaining continuous access for commuters.
Impact and Innovation
The Route 9 Broadway Bridge project is a defining example of Fort Miller’s leadership in accelerated bridge construction and precast engineering. From custom-casting massive span units with exacting skew tolerances to seamlessly incorporating major utility lines into the deck design, Fort Miller’s approach combined innovation, precision, and efficiency.
This project not only delivered one of the longest and heaviest precast bridge decks in the firm’s portfolio but also demonstrated the real-world advantages of modular construction: shortened project timelines, reduced traffic disruptions, improved site safety, and superior product quality.
The result is a high-performance bridge built to endure, serving as a benchmark for future infrastructure projects in New York and beyond.
