Project Overview
Fort Miller was a key precast concrete provider for the Grand Central Terminal – East Side Access Project, an expansive public transit development that extended Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service into Manhattan. Our team delivered structural and architectural precast concrete components designed to meet the structural, aesthetic, and durability requirements of this high-profile transportation project.
For this project, Fort Miller manufactured over 3,300 architectural precast elements, including:
- Custom groin ribs for structural integrity and aesthetic enhancement
- Deck panels and platform panels designed for high-traffic durability
- Precast wall panels with architectural finishes
- Smoke exhaust panels and stair components
To achieve seamless integration with Grand Central Terminal’s iconic design, we developed 462 custom shop drawings and fabricated 313 unique precast elements. Our in-house engineering team utilized 28 custom wood and steel forms, many fabricated in-house to ensure precision.
Manufacturing & Logistics Excellence
All structural and architectural precast elements were fabricated at our Greenwich, NY facility, then transported 180 miles to Queens, NY via flatbed trailer over the course of approximately 1,300 loads. From there, the contractor delivered each unit underground to the project site where contractors installed them piece by piece using cranes in a confined, mined cavern. From a logistics standpoint, building this train terminal was like building a ship within a bottle.
Architectural Precast Finishes & Aesthetic Quality
Fort Miller employed advanced architectural precast techniques to meet MTA’s design and performance specifications.
White and gray concrete mixes along with smooth and sandblasted finishes helped bring this landmark transit project to life, ensuring long-term durability and seamless integration with Grand Central Terminal’s historic aesthetic
