Super-Slab® can be utilized for rapid, and often even overnight precast repairs when disruption to the traveling public must be minimized.
Overnight Precast Repairs to Toll Plaza with Fort Miller’s Super-Slab® Precast System
Bensalem, PA
Project Details
- Owner: Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
- Engineer: McCormick Taylor
- Contractor: Allan Myers, L.P.
- Scope: 337 slabs
Project Overview
Project contractor Allen Myers chose Fort Miller’s Super-Slab® precast system for this complex toll plaza replacement project, recognizing its suitability for the intricate geometry and high-traffic demands of the site.
This high-traffic toll plaza required 337 custom-fabricated slabs to meet the challenging geometry of a two-lane approach that transitions into 19 radial lanes for the toll booths.
Fort Miller collaborated with licensed fabricator Northeast Precast, who cast the slabs locally at their Millville facility. This project underlines the effectiveness of Fort Miller’s Super-Slab® in overnight precast repairs, combining rapid installation and long-term resilience.
Scope and Details
This complex installation utilized 55-hour weekend closures to minimize traffic disruptions and maintain revenue flow for the Turnpike Authority.
Fort Miller partners with precast facilities across the U.S. and Canada to provide our cutting-edge paving solution to projects outside our traditional delivery radius. Key aspects included:
- Traffic Flow and Revenue Preservation: To prevent loss of income, several lanes remained open throughout construction, allowing toll operations to continue. Each Monday morning, the entire plaza was cleared and ready for full functionality..
- Staged Installation for Precision: The individual pavement slabs, fabricated by Northeast Precast, were delivered to a nearby staging area during the week. From there, they were trucked to the site in the exact order needed for rapid installation, ensuring an efficient process within each limited construction window.
Impact and Innovation
This toll plaza replacement project highlights Fort Miller’s commitment to providing durable, efficient infrastructure solutions in high-traffic areas. By utilizing the Super-Slab® system, this project achieved:
- High Precision and Durability: The custom-fabricated slabs accommodated the unique geometry of the site, supporting smooth transitions from two lanes into multiple toll lanes while ensuring long-lasting durability against heavy traffic loads.
- Minimized Disruptions: The strategic scheduling and staged delivery allowed for minimal impact on traffic flow, benefiting commuters and supporting revenue stability for the Turnpike Authority.
Fort Miller’s Super-Slab® technology is ideal for complex infrastructure projects requiring rapid, and even overnight precast repairs, offering unmatched durability, swift installation, and applicability nationwide.
The adaptability and efficiency of precast technology make it ideal for complex infrastructure settings, supporting both operational and financial continuity for high-demand transit sites.

Since the 1970s, our primary focus has revolved around the manufacturing of products for highway construction projects. Originating from humble beginnings that involved median barriers, box culverts, and retaining walls, we have evolved to contribute to monumental highway infrastructure projects, including the “Big Dig” in Boston, MA, and the replacement of the Chelsea Viaduct for MassDOT.
