- Scope: 1,300+ Super-Slabs®, precast slab Design-Build
Project Overview
New York State’s modernization efforts to enhance traffic flow, efficiency, and driver experience with cashless tolling included more than 55 sites and 1,300 precast slab components. Cashless Tolling Constructors LLC/A trusted Fort Miller Precast to design and supply a solution for this precast slab design-build project.
The project utilized a combination of Super-Slab® precast pavement panels and pressure-sensitive detectors (treadles) from Mile Post (MP) 45.03 to 496.00 along the Thruway.
Scope and Details
The project replaced the outdated manual toll booths, in use since 1954, with modern precast components featuring embedded cashless technology. The work included both mainline sites and off-road sites at entrance and exit ramps.
- Mainline Sites: 21 sites with 7 slabs installed on the approach side and 3 slabs on the leave side of the treadle. Lane widths varied between 2 and 3 lanes.
- Off-road Sites: 34 sites with 2 slabs installed on each side of the treadle. The precast ramp slabs adjacent to the treadles were intricately cast with sensor loops for vehicle detection and counting, essential for the cashless tolling system.
This innovative precast toll booth replacement solution required precise coordination and execution.
In addition to the installation, each site required meticulous attention to associated electrical work, gantry installation, and control building construction to ensure seamless integration and operation of the electronic tolling infrastructure already in place.
The project demanded to meet stringent quality standards and deadlines while minimizing disruption to Thruway operations.
Impact and Innovation
Since 2020, the system has processed over one billion transactions, accounting for more than 17.4 billion miles traveled.
By embracing electronic cashless tolling technology and innovative precast solutions, this initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure management, enhancing traffic efficiency and commuter convenience along the New York Thruway system.

Featured Highway Projects
Since the 1970s, our primary focus has revolved around the manufacturing of products for highway construction projects. Originating from humble beginnings that involved median barriers, box culverts, and retaining walls, we have evolved to contribute to monumental highway infrastructure projects, including the “Big Dig” in Boston, MA, and the replacement of the Chelsea Viaduct for MassDOT.
